My heart has been greatly burdened the past few days for the erroneous teaching that has been in existence for centuries and has influenced many to have a false security and assurance of salvation! The subject at hand is that of Antinomianism which succinctly stated by Martin Luther, means "without law". In essence, it does away with the law of God, and promotes only the grace of God, with the logic of, "If you are justified by faith alone, you may live as you please. You have a place in Heaven, so sin to your heart's content!" While Christians are indeed justified by faith alone, we will inevitably demonstrate that faith by lives which are not merely moral but positively holy. John Calvin said, "We are justified by faith alone - but the faith that justifies us is never alone!" True saving faith is always accompanied by a holy life and good works. Justification of necessity entails sanctification. Robert Murray McCheyne said, "If Christ justifies you, He will sanctify you! He will not leave you in your sins."
The Antinomian error is a fatal confusion of justification with sanctification. Some think that justification releases the Christian from the demands of the Moral Law. Others believe that since God has forgiven the believer's sins - past, present, and future - that sin is no longer a problem! That the believer is regarded as sinless and therefore free from all moral obligation expressed in terms of law. Is this Biblical? Did Jesus Christ die to redeem and save us from our sins only to leave us floundering under it's power and helpless to overcome it? I am embarking upon a study of what is of great and eternal importance to the child of God. I encourage you to study the Word of God with me and to search it our for yourself!
Next time.....extensive distinctions between justification & sanctification!
